The roar of tunneling machines is now a constant hum beneath the centuries-old foundations of Jaipur’s Walled City. Phase 1C of the Jaipur Metro, stretching from Badi Chaupar to Transport Nagar, represents more than just a 2.85-kilometer extension; it is a high-stakes engineering feat designed to decongest one of India’s most dense tourist corridors without disturbing the delicate pink sandstone architecture above.

Preserving the Pink City Soul

Engineers are utilizing advanced Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machines to ensure ground stability near sensitive structures like the Hawa Mahal. Real-time vibration monitoring sensors have been placed on nearly 150 heritage buildings to provide instant alerts if structural integrity is compromised during the underground excavation.

The transition from the traditional rickshaw-clogged lanes to high-speed underground transit is expected to reduce surface traffic by nearly 30 percent in the first year of operation. This shift is crucial for preserving the facade of the UNESCO World Heritage site, which currently suffers from high levels of vehicular soot and vibration.

Future Economic Corridors

Beyond transit, the extension is set to breathe new life into the local markets of Ramganj and Galta Gate. By providing direct connectivity to the wider metro network, these traditional commercial hubs will become more accessible to the city's suburban workforce, potentially shifting the retail dynamics of the entire eastern district.
